Global China Academy (GCA) works with trusted partners in fields such as translation, editing, proofreading, typesetting, graphic design, printing, website design and management, legal advice, and logistical arrangements for visitors.
We are always on the lookout for people who share our mission and are willing to help us advance it by working with us on a voluntary basis.

How can you get involved?
The tasks that need to be done vary from year to year, according to the stage of development of GCA and the projects we are undertaking. The following are some examples of the roles we need to fill:
- Translators from Chinese to English or vice versa for various publications by GCA and Global Century Press
- Professionals, e.g. legal adviser, website designer, graphic designer, editor, proofreader, typesetter
- Event coordinators for the Global China Dialogue forum
- Social media specialists to promote GCA and related projects
- Administrators
- Fundraisers
- Marketing specialists
Reciprocal arrangements with Global China Academy?
The work arrangements are usually flexible: you can complete the tasks in your own time while keeping to an overall schedule. Nearly all the work can be done remotely.
How can you benefit from volunteering for GCA?
There is no monetary payment for this work, but you can benefit in the following ways:
- Being an editor or translator will give you diverse experience and skills, which could help you in your future career.
- If you work as an editor or translator, your name will be published in the journal articles or books or posted on the webpage or sub-page that you edited, proofread or translated.
- You may be able to access some advice from GCA and connections for further developing your own research interests.
- You can submit contributions for fast-track consideration to any GCA publications.
- You can add ‘Associate Editor / Translator for GCA’ to your CV.
- We will provide you with a reference.
- You can become a writer or editor of our blogs.
Want to become a resident volunteer?
The GCA Centre in northwest London has a few guest rooms, including three self-contained studio flats. We regularly provide free accommodation for interns and trainees in exchange for their voluntary work for GCA. Please note when applying:
- Provide the dates of your proposed internship (usually during academic holidays, for example including the period from submission of a thesis to the graduation ceremony for master’s students or the writing-up period for PhD students).
- Before residence is confirmed, there is a one-month trial period, during which either side can withdraw from the arrangement.

How to apply?
If you are interested, please complete the application form, which asks you to provide:
- your basic information and contact details.
- an outline of the work you propose to do for GCA (no more than 500 words). You can get some ideas by browsing the GCA and GCP websites. State what particular work you would like to do, for how long you can commit to volunteering for GCA and why you are applying.
- your CV (in English, or English and Chinese if you can write Chinese).
