Professor Kerry Brown FGCA

Professor Kerry Brown FGCA, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College London. He is an Associate of the Asia Pacific Programme at Chatham House, London, an adjunct of the Australia New Zealand School of Government in Melbourne, co-editor of the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs (German Institute for Global and Area Studies, Hamburg), President of the Kent Archaeological Society, and an Affiliate of the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit at the University of Cambridge. From 2012 to 2015 he was Professor of Chinese Politics and Director of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. Previously he worked at Chatham House (2006–2012) as Senior Fellow and Head of the Asia Programme, and earlier served in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1998–2005), including as First Secretary at the British Embassy in Beijing and Head of the Indonesia, Philippines and East Timor Section. He lived in Inner Mongolia from 1994 to 1996. Brown holds an MA from the University of Cambridge, a Postgraduate Diploma in Mandarin Chinese from Thames Valley University (London), and a PhD in Chinese politics and language from the University of Leeds. He directed the Europe China Research and Advice Network (ECRAN), advising the European External Action Service between 2011 and 2014.
He is the author of more than twenty books on contemporary China, including The Great Reversal: Britain, China and the 400 Year Contest for Power, China Through European Eyes, Xi: A Study in Power, China’s Dreams, China’s World: What Does China Want?, CEO China: The Rise of Xi Jinping, The New Emperors, Hu Jintao: China’s Silent Leader, and Contemporary China, and has edited major reference works such as The Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography (Editor-in-Chief). His books have been translated into more than ten languages.
